1993 - 2013 Michael J Fox Theatre Anniversary Year
On April 30th, 1993, the first Gala performance took place at the new “Theatre at Burnaby South”. Ann Mortifee and Jabula headlined a premiere show to entertain and start the process of developing community spirit in this new venue.
For our anniversary, we’ve dedicated an entire twelve months to celebrate our twenty years of service to the City of Burnaby, the Burnaby School District and to our many cultural communities and presenters.
In February, it was our pleasure to host a reception for the many friends and supporters of what is now the Michael J. Fox Theatre. With the backing of our Board of Directors and a great many sponsors and volunteers, the evening was a fine opportunity to take a historical look “back to the future” as well as enjoy some very current entertainment, fine food and drink, and meet new friends.
Our gala reception enjoyed remarkable support from a number of sponsors including: Hilton Vancouver Metrotown, Delta Hotels, Hart House and Pear Tree restaurants, the ACE-IT Culinary Arts program from Burnaby Central, Pepsi, Salmon’s Rentals, Salt Spring Coffee and Gardenworks.
Volunteers from Burnaby South’s Interact organization, a youth outreach of Rotary International, provided an extraordinary level of service to our many guests that night. Entertainment included spoken word performance from Shayna Virginillo and lively musical theatre numbers from Burnaby Mountain students.
Our sincerest thanks to all who attended and made the evening one to remember!
The rest of the year…
We continue to develop new clients while respecting the needs of current Theatre users - our dance season, for example, is very strong with competition events and studio recitals. We welcome several new owners and operators of studios which have been with us for many seasons, and look forward to serving them for years to come.
With summer, we once again see a full season of Cantonese Opera – almost every weekend has one of these very colourful events – we look forward to seeing our many friends in this special regional community.
Fall and winter brings concerts, seminars, business meetings, television programs, conferences, plus some great holiday events – be sure to be our friend on Facebook or follow us on Twitter and we’ll let you know what’s being presented.
To round out our special anniversary year, in February of 2014 we’ll be hosting Align Entertainment’s production of “Shrek – The Musical”. This extremely popular show will be the one to bring the whole family out to.
The Michael J. Fox Theatre Scholarships for 2013 have now been awarded – prizes have gone to Danitza Garate Cubillos - Burnaby North, Tommy Vo - Burnaby Central, Samantha Harrison - Byrne Creek, Danilo Valle - Byrne Creek and Samuel Ha-young Kim - Burnaby South.
Since 1996, almost $150,000 has been given to deserving Burnaby arts students to support their careers. One of our very first recipients was Ndidi Onukwulu who now enjoys a full career singing her own brand of earthy blues on stages throughout the world – most recently in Germany, Switzerland, France and Belgium. You’ll be able to hear Ndidi at this summer’s Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival at Deer Lake Park and the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.
A little closer to home, one of our most recent scholarship recipients has a special bond to the Theatre – Samuel Kim is a talented multi-instrumentalist and singer and very worthy of his scholarship award. Sam is also one of our hard-working front of house staff and a concession bar specialist – next time you’re in the Theatre, be sure to buy a coffee from him! You can get a glimpse of Sam’s talent in this YouTube video gallery which includes Sam’s entry in a MuchMusic contest –in this event, which drew thousands of entries, Sam and Peggy Yeh made the top ten!
